Open-source desk, 22 October: a Godot beta, a Krita hotfix, and Blender's next LTS build

Oct 22, 2026 · Jay

Three open-source projects moved in the last few weeks, and only one of them is a version you should treat as the download you already have. Godot published a beta snapshot. Krita shipped a one-fix hotfix. Blender’s current 5.2 point release is older than that, and the next one is still a date on a milestone.

This is a roundup of what those pages say. The longer Godot note is Godot 4.8 beta 1 is a snapshot, not the stable download. The ComfyUI changelog, which is a different shelf, is in ComfyUI’s October builds.

Blender 5.2.2 is the build on the page. 5.2.3 is not out.

The Blender row in this directory was checked on 22 October 2026 against the download page. That page offered v5.2.2 LTS and did not print a release date, so the row leaves the date blank. The 5.2 releases index does print one. It lists Blender 5.2.2 LTS on September 15, 2026, Blender 5.2.1 LTS on August 25, 2026, and Blender 5.2.0 LTS on July 14, 2026. The same page says the initial release was July 14, 2026, support runs until July 2028, and the splash artwork is by Joanna Kobierska. The LTS page says 5.2 was last updated to 5.2.2 on September 15, 2026.

September 15 sits just outside a strict four-week window ending today. It is still the point release the project is pointing at. The 5.2 LTS milestone says the series is maintained until July 2028 and that the next release, 5.2.3, is planned for October 27, 2026. Planned is the word on the page. Open issues on that milestone are not fixes that have shipped.

The LTS page also says an LTS version will not have new features, API changes, or improvements, and that critical fixes from the latest stable version are ported over. The 5.2.2 block on the releases index is a bug list. Three titles on it matter if you draw in this build. One says Line Art does not recalculate lines on objects with animated visibility. One says Grease Pencil strokes randomly merge and disappear with draw-on-back toggled on. One is a regression: canceling a transform in Grease Pencil Edit Mode deletes the entire frame under specific conditions, post-5.0, with Auto-Key on. Those are report titles. They are not a claim that every 5.2.1 file hits them. The July 14 feature notes on that page belong to 5.2.0, not to this month.

Krita 5.3.4.1 is one color-management fix

The Krita row records the download page as version 5.3.4.1, released Wednesday, 7 October 2026, for Windows, macOS, and Linux, under GPL-3.0. The October monthly report says that hotfix contains a single regression fix: assigning display profiles did not work. The report calls that important for color management and credits the change to Nicholas LaPointe.

The rest of that report is development news, and it labels the branches. Krita 6 builds now use Qt 6.11.0 instead of 6.8.0, a change by Dmitry Kazakov. The report says work was done to avoid regressions, asks people to report new issues, and says the update may also fix bugs. Dmitry rewrote touchscreen and trackpad gesture support, which adds trackpad gestures to Krita 6 on Wayland. Ayanami Kaine added Temporary Straight Ruler actions in Canvas Input. The report says the Normal action is assigned to V+Left Click by default, which used to activate the Line tool, and the Snapped Angle action, at 15 degrees, is Shift+V+Left Click.

Animation notes in the same report sit under Krita Next, marked unstable, at 5.4.0 and 6.1.0-prealpha. They are not in the 5.3.4.1 hotfix. Among them: change-frame shortcuts work even if the current layer is not animated, and the Recorder docker can capture selection tools plus Freehand Path, Crop, Text, and Move without locking the image. Krita Plus, which the report calls stable, is prealpha 5.3.5 and 6.0.5. The nightly note says there are currently no Qt 6 builds for Android.

If you paint frames, stay on the download you can name. The practical path through the animation workspace is a separate piece: a free 2D path that starts in Krita.

Godot 4.8 beta 1 does not replace 4.7.2

On 15 October 2026, Thaddeus Crews published Dev snapshot: Godot 4.8 beta 1. The article says 4.8 is fully in feature-freeze, with no new features compared with the dev 7 snapshot, and that the build is a pre-release. It asks you to keep backups or use Git. The .NET note on that page says .NET 10.0 or newer is required for this build, moving the minimum from .NET 8 to 10.

Our Godot row is still the stable download we checked: the Linux download page said Godot Engine 4.7.2, 18 August 2026, for Windows, macOS, and Linux, MIT license. A beta snapshot does not rewrite that row. The article’s own count is 340 contributors and 1523 fixes since 4.7-stable, built from commit 4d10419ca. What that is useful for, and what it is not, is in the Godot piece linked above.

Nothing in this roundup is a price, a sale, or a paid add-on. The jobs board and the in-house store on this site are still examples. These three items are the project pages.
